It was Senior Recognition Night at Ashley tonight, as Kyle Stewart, Drake Overton, Donovan Francis, Jordan Fentress?, Nick Golonka?, and Alex Highsmith? played their last home conference game. But the night belonged to sophomore Christian Tafoya?, who dominated on the mound tonight for the Ashley varsity baseball team, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Laney Buccaneers. He faced only 3 batters in 6 of 7 innings, throwing only 73 pitches and allowing 3 hits (all in the 6th inning) to pick up the complete game win.
After a scoreless first 3 and 1/2 innings, the Screaming Eagles struck first, as Dc Russ? singled to right with one out. Drake Overton then reached on an error by the third baseman. Kyle Stewart? then laced a hard single to left, scoring Russ with the first run. Tafoya then hit a ground ball to third, and after tagging his base for the out, the third baseman threw the ball past first for an error, allowing Stewart to score all the way from first.
Laney threatened in the 6th, having runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. After scoring a run on an infield single, the Bucs had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs only down a run. Donovan Francis? then made a tremendous play on a bunt, getting the lead runner at third for a huge out. Tafoya then struck out Laney's next hitter, before escaping the inning with a lineout to shortstop.
With the win, Ashley improves their record to 11-9, 5-6 in the conference. The Screaming Eagles will be back at it again on Wednesday, as Swansboro comes to town for a non-conference game.
