The Ashley varsity baseball team finally had some good weather today, and were finally able to complete a game. The Screaming Eagles hosted the #9 4A team in the state, according to Impact Baseball-- the Lumberton Pirates. Donovan Francis? started on the mound for Ashley, and pitched well, holding the Pirates scoreless for 4 innings, scattering 3 hits for no runs, and picking up 4 strikeouts along the way. The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring an unearned run on Evan Odum, a junior right-handed pitcher who is a UNC commit. Alex Highsmith? led off the inning with a single to left. He then advanced to 2nd on an errant pickoff attempt, and would later score on an error by the Pirate shortstop off the bat of Jordan Fentress?. Donovan would help his own cause with a solo homerun to right-center off of Odum in the bottom of the 3rd. The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the seventh, when Lumberton scored 7 runs, 6 of them unearned, as Ashley had a difficult time with the twilight sky, making it tough to see balls in the air. After a couple of singles, and 2 errors on a pickoff play to 2nd, Lumberton scored the go-ahead runs on a fly ball that was dropped in the outfield. They would then tack on 3 more runs, securing the win by a 7-2 score. Drake Overton took the hard-luck loss for the Eagles. Evan Laverick? and Alex Highsmith paced to offensive attack, picking up 2 hits each. Ashley's record is now 0-1, and will be back in action for our conference opener on Tuesday at South Brunswick.
