Ryan Hauck announced that the Ashley boys track and field team had won the Mideastern Conference. A split second later, he had nowhere to move.
Surrounded by his athletes, Hauck smiled as a cooler of ice water was dumped over his head in celebration of the team's sixth straight conference championship.
"We have kids that year-in and year-out have sold into our program and what we do. That shows on the track," Hauck said. "All the things you think a program should be, they kind of developed into that. We always say it takes the kids to do it. All we can do as coaches is point them in the right direction."
Ashley's 192 points were more than enough to earn the title. New Hanover finished runner-up at 160. Hoggard was a distant third at 93.
The Screaming Eagles won the title by winning events. The boys captured the 4x100 and 4x200 relays with Caleb Parker, Isaiah Fields and Damien Batts running in both. Daniel Suggs won the pole vault and Olojiday Olatidoye took the triple jump. Thrower Russell Corbert was the team's lone two-event winner, capturing the shot put and discus.
"It felt awesome for the first time," Corbett said with a smile. He had never won an event conference championship before Thursday. "I had confidence from my coaches."
The continued success meant Hauck left the stadium soaked to the bone and cold. He didn't see it as a problem.
