Brian Howell put up a huge first half, helping the Wildcats get off to a good start in a 71-50 win against Ashley.
Howell scored a team-high 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half. He also grabbed some big rebounds and blocked some timely shots.
New Hanover (6-2 overall, 1-1 Mideastern) didn't settle for outside shots, opting to set up things in the paint. The end result was a lot of shots in the post and a ton of fouls. The team went 16-for-25 from the free throw line.
"We just had to stay physical down low," Howell said. "Being physical is the way we play. To win any game, you have to be physical."
The Screaming Eagles (5-3, 2-1) fell into a double-digit hole early. After Tyre' Gathright pulled the team within one on a layup off a turnover, New Hanover went on a 9-1 run to close out the period. Tyre Gathright finished with a game-high 23.
The Eagles play in the Leon Brogden Tournament at UNC-W on 12/27 at 1:30pm.
