Joe Mondragon waited until the right time and then he made his move.
With 10 seconds remaining in his 132-pound state championship 4A wrestling match, the Ashley senior secured a takedown to claim a 4-3 victory over Apex's Chance Davis.
"I took him down before and he reversed me, so I didn't want to take him down too fast with too much time to go," Mondragon said. "I kind of wanted to pace it out and take him down with a couple of seconds left. I got him down with 10 seconds left and just had to ride him out for (a few) seconds and that's all it took."
Mondragon (45-2), who finished fifth last season, became the first Screaming Eagle to claim a wrestle state title.
After a scoreless first period, Davis (40-2) got an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Mondragon took the lead with a takedown, but quickly gave it back when Davis got a reversal.
Mondragon selected neutral to begin the third and waited until the perfect time to secure his title-winning takedown.
"This is all I've been focused on since my freshman year, really," Mondragon said.
