Jeff Turner was announced Friday as Ashley's fifth head coach. He joins the school after being an assistant at Hoggard since 2004.
"I felt like this is a really hungry community," Turner said. "And it would be a special thing to come here and start with a basic foundation of good coaches and eager players and build something."
Turner brings a winning pedigree. Running the defense under longtime coach Scott Braswell, Hoggard is 96-32 with seven conference championships and a state title since 2004. Turner endured only one losing season with the Vikings and now inherits a program with opposite history.
As the third coach in as many seasons, Turner also faces the challenge of motivating players after another do-over.
"The first thing is belief," athletic director Roy Turner said. "He's gotta cast what he believes in. He's gotta be transparent. He's gotta get the kids to understand, and the parents.
"You can talk all you want about what you want to do and what you believe in, but every decision you make after you start working with the kids either confirms that belief or puts doubt in the head. And I think that's gonna be the key.Today is the day to start our journey to success. As the search committee went through the process of selecting a new head football coach, we wondered how we could honor the past and prepare for the future and the answer was very clear, "Rip off the rear view mirror" and take advantage of the opportunity we have by hiring Jeff Turner as our new Football coach. He understand the steps in building a successful program and the work involved in the process of maintaining success year in and year out".
. Coach Jeff Turner said, " the journey to success will not be easy, but it will be worth it in the end".
